Red Hill Brewery
Where did you grow up and where are you based now?
Mostly on the Mornington Peninsula, where I am now based
What did you want to be when you ‘grew up’?
When and how did you transition from working for someone else to working for yourself?
I think I could see the writing on wall for the high powered corporate career woman. Long hours, long childcare if you had kids at all. Daily commutes. I was young and naïve enough to just give it everything and believe 100% there was no way it could fail. We both had relevant industry skills that we bought to the business
What’s your why?
I would regret it if I didn’t. No regrets!
What do you love about what you do?
Being in control of our own destiny and getting to drink fantastic beers all the time.
What’s challenged you most since being in business?
So many things! Budgets, being a parent, staff, production shortfalls, there are so many unbelievable stories over a decade of things that have happened that seem unimaginable. And not ever something you would imagine you would encounter in your life.
What are your greatest achievements to date?
Launching a business from scratch, making it successful, whilst becoming a mother and raising two daughters and being involved in their lives and brewing world class award winning beer.
What are some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
There is always something changing! We almost annually make quite a shift in how we run the business and our lives. Sometimes the work/life balance has to be changed between us depending on the employees we have in our teams, we make new roles for people to replace ourselves, we make new procedures, the balance of the skills of the team and ourselves is constant change.
What are some resources you or your business can’t live without?
Technology – social media, has been great for a small business like ours with a dedicated audience of beer appreciators. And beer taps.
What advice would you give someone wanting to start their own business or change jobs to an industry/role that they’d love?
What’s something most people wouldn’t know about you?
I love to surf and ski
What does your ideal day look like?
An early surf, multiple ticks off the to-do list at work, a nice dinner with friends
What’s one of your favourite quotes?
The only normal people out there are the ones you don’t know very well yet!
Who or what inspires you?
