Gren Design

Where did you grow up and where are you based now?

I grew up in suburban Knoxfield which had a great community feel and we knew everyone in our street. I really loved it. We’ve just moved to Fingal (Moonah Links) and look forward to getting to know all my new neighbors.

What did you want to be when you ‘grew up’?

A dancer in my very early youth to a scientist in my teens and then found my passion for design near the end of high school and haven’t looked back since – although I still love a good dance and doco!

When and how did you transition from working for someone else to working for yourself?

I was working at a design studio in Vermont and was looking for a change and the thing I loved most: a challenge. I knew how to be a designer but nothing about business so I through myself in and soaked up all the information I could gather and what an amazing journey it has been.

What’s your why?

Connecting with business owners and sharing stories + our

What do you love about what you do?

Connecting with my client’s business stories and journey is what gets me excited and then the challenge of creating the visual solution to communicate that to their customers. The best bit of all is when they are proud and confident with their business brand and collateral to then promote and share to potential customers.

What’s challenged you most since being in business?

Time management is always been a big one for me but since I started breaking my day into productive/work blocks, email blocks, stretches and yes a lunch break… my time management has been more manageable.

What are your greatest achievements to date?

Growing my business from just me to now being a team of 5 has been a big achievement. Plus separating my home and business to be in different locations which helped create Grenco a co-working space in the other section of our office to help small businesses escape their own home offices and connect with others.

What are some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way?

Face your fears as once you do amazing success and achievement follows.

What’s the toughest decision you’ve had to make since running your own business?

Deciding if I should hire staff / employ someone to help with the business growth – I was terrified of if I could do it and it was the best thing I could of done and now I’ve hired 4 amazing individuals.

What are some resources you or your business can’t live without?

Software!!! From design programs to project management it helps us create amazing designs as well as be super efficient. There is nothing I love more than coming across some new software to master.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start their own business or change jobs to an industry/role that they’d love?

Follow your heart, research your audience, surround yourself with positive people, look after yourself + work smart – think differently

What’s something most people wouldn’t know about you?

I volunteered on a white lion breeding project and game reserve in South Africa for one month.

What does your ideal day look like?

An early morning walk with my husband and pup to start the day then into the office before the team arrive to settle into the morning. My work day will be filled great coffee, discussing some branding strategies with clients, brainstorming projects with the team, some stretches to step away from the desk and refresh and some design concepts for the afternoon. On heading home listen to a podcast learning something newalong the way and coming home to my husband, pup and 2 cats. Enjoying a hearty meal another walk and some down time in a nice hot bath J

What’s one of your favourite quotes?

'Do what you love. It makes all the difference.' Steve Jobs

Who or what inspires you?

The amazing business owners I meet and their incredible achievements.
