Where did you grow up and where are you based now?
I grew up in Western Sydney and haven’t moved….I love it here!
What did you want to be when you ‘grew up’?
Always a journalist, but uni turned me off it completely!
When and how did you transition from working for someone else to working for yourself?
It happened organically… I was contacted by an ex-colleague when I was on maternity leave who needed help, and I realised that working on my terms was completely and utterly achievable.
What’s your why?
I do it for myself – I need to keep busy, keep creating and keep moving.
What do you love about what you do?
The creativity, the diversity, my (awesome) clients, and the fact that I can be flexible with hours, projects and goals.
What’s challenged you most since being in business?
Time management. It’s not my greatest strength and so I prioritise client’s work over my own. As a result my business gets absolutely no love.
What are your greatest achievements to date?
I hit my income target in my very first year, so now I’m building on that. I’m also sitting at an uber-high success rate for business awards and tenders.
What are some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
That I need to outsource to specialists! Graphic design and bookwork are the two biggies for me.
What’s the toughest decision you’ve had to make since running your own business?
I’m lucky that it’s all been pretty positive so far… touch wood.
What are some resources you or your business can’t live without?
Xero! Love it. Also Mailchimp, Canva, Facebook and the online thesaurus. ;-)
What advice would you give someone wanting to start their own business or change jobs to an industry/role that they’d love?
Find a mentor! Not necessarily someone who knows your industry, but someone who knows small business inside and out.
What’s something most people wouldn’t know about you?
That I’ve completed an Ironman (3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run). And that I’m hopelessly addicted to licorice. And chocolate. Sometimes together.
What does your ideal day look like?
Coffee, family and a day at the beach.
What’s one of your favourite quotes?
Be the change you want to see in the world.
Who or what inspires you?
I find inspiration everywhere – I have some brilliant small business friends who do such magnificent work, an awesome husband who sets a goal and commits to smashing it, and a mum who has not once complained since losing a limb. I’m very lucky to be surrounded by amazing people.
Anything you’d like to add?
