It’s close to impossible to do marketing without great visuals these days. The book is really judged by its cover, it seems. However, not everyone can afford to have an in-house designer or outsource. You are considering to do it yourself, but where should you start? Everything just seems so complicated when you have no design background. Don’t worry, here are design tools that make your marketer’s life easier.
There are many good things about Canva. First, it’s a freemium service, so you can start with a free account before deciding if you should pay for it. Second, even with the free account, you can still enjoy a fair bit of the tool and cover your basic needs: posters, cards, social media posts, banners, blog graphics and more. There are pre-designed templates that you can customise to your brand image and messages. With the free account, you also have access to quite a number of free photos, icons and templates. A must-have design tool for marketers.
Piktochart has a big collection of infographic templates, giving you plenty of options to suit your need. It’s also a freemium service. The free account is handy if you already have an idea of what your design will look like as you only have access to a limited number of templates. If you need some inspiration, check out Piktochart’s gallery or Visually Community to get inspired. Use the paid account if you want to access hundreds of their pre-made templates. The tool makes it very simple to represent your data. Simply input the data and they will be automatically reflected in the visual.
Colours play an important part of your design. Often times, if you use the above tools, they have already had a pretty palette for you. However, if you need to change the colours but are not sure about colour theories, Paletton will help you. Key in the code of the main colour, the tool will give you suggestions on which go well with it. After that, simply copy the code of those colours to the design tool.
Beautiful stock images come with a big price tag. While we all love the photos from Shutterstock or Getty Image, we can’t always afford them. If you are on a tight budget, and Canva’s image library doesn’t have the image you need, check out Pixabay. You will have access to over 900,000 royalty-free photos. They can be used for commercial purposes and are free of charge. Simply download the photos and upload them to the desired design tool.
Unsplash is similar to Pixabay, but not quite. It has a smaller collection of over 200,000 photos. These are contributions from photographers. They do come with the artists’ styles, so they can be a bit tricky to use. However, the quality of the images is amazing.
Fonts can make or break your design. If you have already had a branding guideline, follow it. However, if you have the flexibility to try different fonts, check out Canva’s Font Combination tool. It will give you some suggestions on how to combine the fonts. The downside of the tool is that it only gives recommendations, you will need to download the fonts elsewhere.
This font directory gives you access to a great number of fonts which you can easily download and use in your designs. They are open source, meaning you can customise, improve and share them as you see fit, and they are, of course, can be used for commercial purpose.
