Once the baby comes, your entire world changes. Apart from the little human fully depending on you, there are some practical issues that need resolving. It often happens that working from 9 to 5 and staying overtime is no longer an option, even with your child in a long day care center. However, there are other things you have skills for, apart from your chosen vocation. You probably haven’t worked hard enough on developing them. Luckily, that which you love is easily perfected. Learn which of your hobbies can be made into a career and the ways you can do it.

Develop your idea

Once you are aware of the skills you possess, you need to work to turn that idea into an actual plan. Start by getting to know the market and the audience. Profile your customers. If you are not entirely aware of who your audience is, you can use a tool as simple as Facebook’s audience insights. It will help you understand who is after the products or services you can provide.

Check out the competition and try to come up with something which will give you an advantage over them. Your competition is also an excellent way of finding out the pricing you can implement. Knowing what you know now, shape your offer and the range of products or services. Look for suppliers to find out which expense you can expect.

The setup

The setup is also a part of developing the idea. Once you know the audience, the competition, the suppliers, the product range, and the pricing, you will have a rough idea of whether the business can be profitable. If it is, you need to start the actual “physical work”. Look into legal requirements for the specific business. Also, set up an office or space you will be working in and obtain the necessary equipment. When purchasing the equipment, make a list of basics and start from there. Also, think about the ways you can advertise the business and deliver the goods to your customers.

Improve your skills

If you have been using this talent and the skills only as a hobby, the chances are that they are on a basic level. Regardless of how good you may be at your hobby, there is almost certainly room for improvement. Look for courses which can help you broaden the range of products or services you offer. The courses such as eyelash extension classes are designed to teach skills required for providing additional services. On the other hand, there are courses which simply teach you how to use a piece of equipment and make your job easier. Target the courses carefully and work towards constant improvement to make yourself more competitive.

Catering

Catering is an excellent business opportunity for those good at baking and cooking. Perhaps additional skills you could learn here is how to arrange and decorate food, and how to set up a perfect buffet line. Use your talent to make tasty bites, and learn new skills to present them like a pro. You can start this business small and scale it up with time. Bake holiday ginger, cinnamon, and chocolate chip cookies and sell them at local markets and fairs. Bake custom cakes for people’s special events. Once your business proves as stable, you can employ more people and start catering large venues.

Arts and crafts

Arts and crafts encompass some of the most beautiful hobbies and provide a variety of business opportunities. You can offer a wide range of products. The fact that everything you make is handmade and unique, gives you an advantage by differentiating you from your competitors. You can make custom and personalized decorative items, or even build, repair, and refinish pieces of furniture. If you enjoy painting, you can sell your work, or provide services such as painting murals.

Blogging/YouTubing

Personal stories about people coping with everyday problems are always welcome. As a mum, you have a wide, yet specific audience whose issues you can target and help resolve. Tell others how you are coping in a written form or through a vlog. Not to discriminate against anyone, you are a mum, but I am sure there is more to you. Develop a story around your passion be it DIY, traveling, sewing, playing games, fitness etc. and write about it on a blog or share YouTube videos.

In Summation

These are only some of the most common hobbies taken seriously. Regardless of what your skills are, they can always be shaped to fit a market and satisfy a part of its demand. Evaluate your idea and make a plan. Start small, it will make you feel safe. Develop further once you recognize the right moment. The most important thing is to believe in yourself. There is nothing to worry about, once you start your business from something you love, and you see the profit, it won’t be long before you expend.
