Getting the Balance Right

Small Business, family, and all the rest….

Let me tell you a little bit about myself…. My name is Felicity, I am sitting on the far end of my thirties and I, like many of you, am a working Mum. I have a fabulous husband, who has a very demanding job, and I have 5 (yes that’s right!) incredible children. And I am the CEO and Founder of Audacious Digital and Small Sites.

Just like my customers – I run a small business. So I get it! I get the panicked phone calls late in the night, the deadlines where it is razor tight to make the timeline for the project, the staff member that calls in sick on a crucial day….. And then the having to get up at 5:45 the next day to make sure that #2 son gets to his band rehearsal before school.

I don’t claim to have all the answers – but during my journey as a (gosh, I hate the word!) Entrepreneur, I have learned (and am fast learning) a few things. So here’s my top 3 for Getting the Balance Right – as a small business person and as busy Mum.

1. Get organised

When I have both home and work organised things hummmmmm…… if I let the organisation in either my home life or in my business get out of kilter then things, inevitably, hit a wall. At work I use Asana to manage my team and my projects, Xero to manage my books, and G-Suite to manage our email and data. At home (because I am online all day) I go analogue! I have a set, seasonal monthly menu plan (with shopping list), a job chart (for me, hubby and the kids) and rewards charts for the little ones. Let me know if you want to know more about these! Happy to share 🙂

2. Get help!

I need a team behind me, both at work and at home. At work I have a fabulous team who help on a day to day basis. We work mainly part-time so that I can spread the risk if someone leaves by having all tasks known by two people. It means if there is a Mother’s Day Morning Tea at school – I can go and my business keeps on without me. At home I love airtasker! I have a team of people who fill in for me when I can’t do it myself… and they are there waiting for when I need them! It’s the mumpreneurs best friend!

3. Switch off!

This one is so hard! My team knows to only contact me when I am offline if it is a true emergency (and they know what an emergency is because we have spoken about it). This is not only because when I am home my kids and husband need me but because I need the “tech break”. I tried working 24-7 and there were multiple casualties – literally!

So that is my top tips – as I said, I am still learning, growing and changing, every-single-day!
