How to Convert Your Garage into a Home Office

If you’re working from home, the definition of your current office probably matches the desk and the chair next to your bed, since that was the only space you could claim only for yourself. Perhaps you even have a special room for the purpose – but you’re constantly being interrupted by your family, and you don’t feel comfortable having clients in since they first have to go through the (always a bit messy) living room. The solution is simple and obvious – use your garage instead!

Even though it’s just used for storage at the moment, you shouldn’t have any qualms about it. With a bit of effort, you can turn it into a professional-looking business space just for you and your clients. All it takes are a few simple steps.

 

Step 1: Remove the clutter

While you’re used to putting everything away in this part of your home, that will no longer do. You’ll have to find a new place for the Christmas tree, tools and winter clothes. Those can’t be seen lying around in any office downtown, can they? Therefore, absolutely everything has to go if it has nothing to do with your business.

 

Step 2: Windows and doors

In order to make space appear more office-like, try to imagine a window or two in it. Natural light is great for your productivity, and it is also very inviting to the business visitors. On the other hand, if it’s really impossible to add a window or a skylight, a modern garage door is the answer. What is more, it’s one of the first things the client notices about your business premises, so it had better look impressive. Fortunately, today you can find glide garage doors of excellent design which instantly show how professional and successful you are. Of course, plenty of them have windows, so the lighting problem can easily be solved in this way, too.

 

Step 3: Looking up

If you wish for the things to be looking up in your business, that’s exactly what you have to do here. Literally go up. Raise the ceiling to create the feeling of spaciousness, and this will lead to a rise in your profits as well.

 

Step 4: Insulation

You’ll probably be spending a lot of your time at the desk, but garages aren’t primarily meant for us spending a long time sitting there. The heat and cold are felt more here than in the rest of your home. For this reason, it’s vital that you invest in insulating the garage walls. If there’s a chance, connect it with the heating system you already have. Alternatively, a big fan and a portable space heater should be good enough.

 

Step 5: Cover the floor

Not only does the concrete floor seem odd in a business office, but you will also feel cold quite often if you leave it like that. Therefore, introduce hardwood floor or laminate and kill two birds with one stone. Even better, cover it with a rug and it will give the space a whole new dimension.

 

Step 6: Stay connected

Your garage is your new office, which means there has to be an excellent internet connection if you are to do your job properly. Either connect it to your home network or set up a new one.

 

Step 7: Quality furniture

First impression matters, so all of the above will easily fade away if your workplace is stacked with old furniture that no one else needs. High-quality pieces of furniture send an important message. Your desk chair has to be comfortable for your own good, and you will probably have enough space for all the cabinets and shelves. Maybe even a mini fridge or a table for going over contracts. Personal touches here and there will score some points, but don’t’ overdo it. Be creative, but keep it simple as well.

Turning your garage into a home office is no mean feat, and it requires a lot of careful planning, not to mention a certain budget. However, it’s the best possible option if you have a home business to run. You will be at home, yet conveniently separated from all the family distractions, and completely ready to welcome potential clients.
