Time and time again, contractors and their teams get caught up in a tight situation when the project just can’t seem to get off the ground.

Whether it is the unmet deadlines or excessive costs, all aspects of a particular project simply fail to align, leading to a dead-end situation.

Luckily, by using smart data, projects can be done in short periods of time and without unnecessary complications and delays. In fact, there is an increasing number of companies starting to prioritize smart construction with the hope of embracing the innovations altogether.

What exactly is smart data?

Smart data is any data we can retrieve by using advanced technologies in construction. This term is closely linked to “smart construction”, and it applies to a variety of things, including:

  • Intelligent or automated buildings which have advanced technologies implemented in their systems.
  • Smart cities which are built to nurture a sustainable environment.

The construction industry has often been criticized for undergoing only slight changes in the way it works. Starting from the materials used to the very process, there hasn’t been any significant change in the last few centuries.

However, technology has managed to bring about real change in this industry.

Now, we can embed sensors and data management into construction operations and enable controlled performance which can bring the human error to a minimum.

Static 2D blueprints are slowly becoming a thing of the past, with dynamic 3D technologies allowing engineers, contractors, managers, and everyone involved in a project to perform accurate planning and execution.

 

Why digital planning matters?

We can’t talk about digital planning without mentioning BIM.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) stands for 3D model-based processes.

It gives architecture, engineering, and construction professionals valuable tools to easily plan, construct, design, or manage any built asset.

In the last two decades, BIM has taken over the world of construction modeling, leaving CAD software far behind.

The advantages BIM has over CAD include:

  • Better visualization
  • Simple information exchange
  • Better document coordination
  • Connectivity of key information (material specifications, parameters, and details)
  • Faster projection process
  • Cost-effectiveness

This software works by providing detailed modeling of a built asset. Each individual change entered into the system is automatically registered and taken into account with regard to its other important specifications.

BIM goes beyond simple geometrics. Not only does it require a whole new approach to a project, but it also enables an interactive data exchange.

On the other hand, we must not forget the fact that the equipment and the materials used in construction are still a vital part of this industry. No matter how perfectly everything is planned through the use of smart data, people have to work on-site to execute the work.

Without the experts offering Formwork Sydney and other mega-cities crave, hardly any smart building would be the way it is today.

 

Error-free blueprint

Traditional construction procedures meant that each segment in the lifecycle of a building was analyzed and viewed separately.

Still, with smart data, we can maintain consistency because everyone involved in a project accesses identical data.

On top of that, big data analytics helps in predicting risks and its accuracy gives valuable insights which improve cost certainty and mitigates possible problems.

Tampering with too much data at the same time has always been an inevitable part of the construction industry.

The Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud-based solutions make it easier for construction companies to shuffle between different projects simultaneously. So far, the amount of work tended to be overwhelming, but smart data has helped organize and manage large amounts of data.

 

 What does the future hold?

The main goal of building smart cities is to improve the standard of living while simultaneously preserving the environment.

It is the ability of smart buildings to integrate economical hardware and software solutions that will encourage an adaptation to this newly-founded smart environment.

Not only does smart technology allow building systems to measure lighting, temperature, and humidity, but it also amplifies the effectiveness of energy use and building safety in the long run.

Possibly one of the greatest changes smart buildings will introduce is their ability to preserve the environment. As landfill waste tends to represent one of the biggest threats to the environment, green buildings will be designed to mend the damage successfully.

 

The construction industry is bound to fully embrace the change headed its way. The truth is that this industry is still the only one that hasn’t fully adapted to the innovations, though.

There is an increasing need to take advantage of the perks technology has to offer. Efficient construction solutions will inevitably give rise to the popularity of smart data.

Until then, individual companies and the entire construction industry should start introducing smart data gradually, until things start falling into place.
