As the owner of Adelaide’s most prestigious day spas, I see so many women walk through the doors exhausted, stressed, fed up. Women from all walks of life whether they are corporate high-end professionals, single mothers, new mothers, grandmothers… I see it all. And the overwhelming consistency between each and every one is that they don’t take nearly as much time as they should out of their busy lives to focus on their health and wellbeing.
“I just don’t have the time”.
It’s the common catch cry for the overworked and highly stressed.
We literally all do it. Rush around, living and working in a constant state of busy-ness, but women have a tendency to put everyone else’s needs before their own, battle through and run themselves into the ground. It’s common and if this sounds like you, you’re not alone. In fact, you’re in good company!
When we recently surveyed our clients at Temple Day Spa a whopping 97% said they didn’t regularly spend the time they know they should on their wellbeing, mental health, and self-care. What’s alarming about that statistic is that even our clientele, the ones who do take time out of their busy schedules and make an appointment for a massage, facial or professional skin treatment, don’t regularly put themselves first.
We all do it. Book in for that “special treat” once in a blue moon and “pamper” ourselves with some relaxation. Why? Why do we feel that our basic needs should be seen as “treats”? Why aren’t we consistently doing what we know is good for our mind and body, without feeling guilty about it and peppering our internal dialogue with words to make us feel better about spending the time and money on ourselves?
Have a think. You can make time to walk the dog, time to catch up with friends… time is yours to do with it how you please. Time isn’t the issue when it comes to putting yourself first. If you have time to watch your favorite TV show, time to flip through Instagram or scroll through Facebook, you HAVE time. You have plenty of it.
The lie we are telling ourselves about time, in relation to finding time to spend on ourselves, is that WE aren’t worth our own time. Which is absolutely crazy.
Think about it… you aren’t worth the very same time you give your friends, your family members, the family dog?
Former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama can even identify with our struggles as women to stay balanced and said “Women in particular need to keep an eye on their physical and mental health, because if we’re scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don’t have a lot of time to take care of ourselves. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own ‘to do’ list.” Called SELF RESPECT xx
So please, do me a favor… and stop lying to yourself about your time and how you and your self-care fits into it. You do have the time, and you should absolutely be squirreling away some, each week, to look after yourself. Ditch the guilt and embrace the idea that you are worth looking after.
You are worth it and you only have one life…be the best you.
