If you don’t make mistakes, you don’t make anything

The British Franchise Association (bfa) gives advice on how to move on from those painful business mistakes, and how to turn them into a positive experience!

Business is full of blunders, some highly publicised. Recently, we all remember the 2017 Pepsi advert disaster with Kendall Jenner, the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 models in 2016, and The Royal Mail rebrand failure to Consignia. All in the bad business decisions hall of fame. It’s these sort of errors from larger companies that make smaller business owners possibly afraid to take risks. However, the truth is that many business mistakes go unnoticed, and you should never let the fear of embarrassment and the unknown keep you from achieving your goals and being innovative. It’s also important that in the event that you do make a mistake, you hold yourself responsible, learn from it, and jump back in the game.

Find yourself a good role model

Bobs Broadbent, founder of the franchise Dogknows, understands the importance of having a good role model, and how this can affect how a business operates. She states: “I have worked for some very bad role models in the world’s biggest organisations and it absolutely sucks. It’s just fundamentally important to be accountable in the workplace and to be a positive influencer.”

“Being a good leader isn’t about dominating or dictating, it’s about knowing how to operate in harmony and allowing the next generation to learn from trial, error and success. We’re all just humans, after all!”

It’s imperative to not sweat the small stuff, and to embrace fear. Everyone has doubts when it comes to making big decisions and running a business, especially when all the responsibility lays on you, but nobody is perfect and you won’t always get everything 100% correct all the time.

Keep the faith

Lucy Cameron, franchise business owner of Actioncoach, believes that if we start to have faith in ourselves, this will positively influence how you do business. She states: “Find your own path, embrace change and believe in yourself.

“I used to worry constantly about the minutiae, always concerned with what other people would say or think and berate myself for not doing enough. We are only human and there are only so many hours in the day; I focus now on celebrating wins and only thinking about situations I can control or influence – everything else I let go!”

Inevitable, and necessary

Making a mistake is only a matter of time, and in the end, it is the only way you will be able to fully understand every aspect of business, develop your business acumen and most importantly, how to pick yourself up and dust yourself off. Toni Hibbert, a franchisee for Bright & Beautiful, understands there is no substitute for experience, even if you will look foolish sometimes along the way. Here, she explains what is needed to own and operate a business: “A broad experience that can help you to wear the many different hats of business ownership is invaluable. You need to be open to learning and self-development and be prepared to make a few mistakes along the way.”

It’s a necessary part of being in the business world if you want to grow and become smarter, tougher and wiser.

Part of increasing your confidence and taking the plunge is by conversing and taking inspiration from your peers, especially inspiring women that have a story to tell. This is why the bfa is holding its sixth empowering women convention, titled Empowering Women in Business (EWIB), at the Nottingham Belfry on November 15.

Focusing on the issues of today for women in business, the key themes revolve around leadership, culture and well-being. The purpose of the day is for women to come together, network, share ideas and experiences and learn from one another.
