Turn your marketing strategy into an action plan with this app

For small businesses, consultants or entrepreneurs one of the biggest day to day challenges is effectively marketing yourself. If you’re doing the marketing solo then you’re competing with large agencies in a busy and loud marketplace, 70% of small businesses report they face challenges due to the competitive nature of digital marketing. We’ve got to get organised and structured in order to compete.

90/10 rule

The first thing to do is to make time. Regardless of your industry type, being a business owner is often overwhelmingly busy but marketing yourself is important and deserves ongoing attention. Try out using our 90/10 rule. This involves making a promise to yourself to spend 90% of the time growing/perfecting your service or product, and 10% of your resources or time implementing your businesses’ marketing strategy. This could be 30 minutes every day or block out 4-hours on a Friday morning. Either way, the key is consistency and dedication. If you trial this approach for 8-weeks and notice obvious growth then consider upgrading to 80/20, whether that’s related to the time of your team or hiring an expert to help implement, it’ll be worth it to grow your empire!

This article focuses on how to turn your strategy into results. For a really great overview of how to create a marketing strategy in the first place, have a read of 10 Questions You Need to Answer to Create a Powerful Marketing Plan’.

Set-up your Hassl free marketing plan

Once you have your strategy clear in your mind, here’s how to follow through and create a live plan of action on my free project management tool Hassl.

Start out by signing up for Hassl. If you are working with other people invite them to be one of your team members. Hassl is a free work collaboration tool made alongside 100’s of small businesses, to create a digital workspace to get things done.

Using the below steps you can use Hassl to set up your live marketing plan.

  1. Create a project “Marketing Plan” with at least a 6-month timeline!

2. Under this project set up each tactic of your strategy as an individual milestone. Here’s an example of some common tactics – social media, PR outreach, partnership opportunities and events.

3. Under each milestone you can then add in all your marketing targets as individual tasks. For example, your social media milestone may include:

A few things you can do for each individual task:

  • Add custom statuses – These are super handy when you want to draw attention to a specific task, for example for Social Media’ you can add a status like “Content required” to remind you that task has dependencies.
  • Add team members – If you have them!

4. Add notes and files

You can use the files section to upload anything needed for the plan such as logos, brand assets and all your social content. You can use the tagging system to group these together so they are easy to get to in the future.

  1. Every day implementation

Once you’ve assigned yourself to tasks you will have a reminder on your dashboard of what is coming up and if you add any other elements of your business to Hassl (which you should), they’ll appear here too, giving you a holistic view of all project progress and your tasks. This will help you stick to the 90/10 rule.

Another useful feature is the to-do list in the top right hand corner. Once your marketing plan is all set-up you can add individual tasks to your every day to-do list, once you tick them off it’ll automatically update your project so your marketing plan will manage itself!

You will be pleasantly surprised how unthreatening it is to implement your marketing strategy once it’s organised and streamlined like this. The marketing plan will just feel part of your day to day operations rather than a huge task you just don’t want to face.

Hassl offers free standard accounts to all small businesses, including a free mobile app launching December 2018. Sign-up today and good luck!
