New or used?

Depends on how much money you can afford and what kind of deal you can get. A new one will give you fewer headaches when it comes to reliability, but you have to be prepared that it would rapidly lose its value over the first few years.

On the other hand, a well-maintained used car with low mileage can be just the right thing for you. You might be able to find a used car by a more renowned manufacturer with much better equipment and features than some of the new models out there.

 

Know what you want

Buying a car involves several stages, such as choosing the car, negotiating the price and structuring your payment. It is vital you stick to your plan. Don’t make compromises in any of the stages. Buying a wrong car, accepting a price that is too high or striking a deal that would see you pay much more than you originally thought are all equally bad for you.

You might want to hire them to examine your car before you sign the papers if you’re buying a used car. They’ll be happy to do that for a small fee, since you might become their regular customer. They might even let you in on something you never thought existed, as these latest tyre innovations, for instance.

 

Do online research

There is a great advantage you should take when looking for your new car. An active businesswoman doesn’t have time to visit all the dealerships and inspect all vehicles. Instead, she should narrow down the search by locating local dealerships and their offers via the Internet. You may even negotiate the price online and save time, but it’s important that the car is inspected by a reliable mechanic before you sign the contract.

 

They expect you to cave in

Car salespeople expect you to cave and make concessions if they persuade you that what you’re looking for is unrealistic. Their job is to get as much profit as possible, but you don’t want to be at the paying end. After all, you haven’t become a successful businesswoman by showing weakness, right? Just saying “I’ll think about it” will probably make a salesperson call you very soon with an improved offer.

 

Read the contract carefully

They might want to add some extras, such as extended warranty, paint protection and rust proofing at additional cost, but you have to know that they are total gimmicks and you shouldn’t accept to pay for those. If they want to throw them in for free, it’s OK, but don’t let them make you believe they are doing a great service to you.

Cars are an expensive investment, which is almost always necessary. So, you don’t want to invest in a product that you’ve overpaid or which won’t be reliable enough to take you to your destination.
