How to keep your house clean during the Holidays

The holidays are a magical time, but they can also create an immense burden on a home. Packed schedules and hosting company can lead to a home that stays dirty, rather than clean, for an elongated period of time.

However, it doesn’t have to be this way. Here are a few tips to keeping your house clean throughout the holiday period.

Get Prepared

People are constantly exclaiming that the holidays creep up on them and catch them by surprise. With our busy lives and schedules, its easy for summer to pass and Thanksgiving to be here before we know it

However, with a little preparation, both physically and mentally, you can be a lot better equipped to keep your house clean during the holidays. And, the extra work in advance isn’t actually very much.

Think through the areas of your house that tend to get a bit out of control during the holidays. Chances are, it’s the common areas like the living room, dining room, and kitchen.

Prepare for a mess in these areas by doing a deep clean prior to the holidays. Get some cleaning supplies ready and on hand for quick clean ups.

Make your life easier if possible by picking up some reinforcements. For example, a lot of people will grab a cheap but high quality vacuum for their hall closet. Easy to whip out and do a quick clean, it allows you to stay on top of messes a lot easier than having to pull out a large vacuum every night.

Stay On Top of Things

As the holidays descend on your, one easy way to keep up on your home’s cleanliness is just that – keep up. Don’t let things slide during this time period. If you can keep up on the mess, then you can stay on top of it during the holidays.

Keep the dishwasher empty so that you don’t have a dish backup in the sink. Or, if you don’t have a dishwasher, use some quick clean tactics to stay on top of it.

Quickly go through the mail each night and sort it in order of priority, so you don’t miss a bill or something important.

Be smart by thinking through things in advance. If you’ll be hosting company, what would make live easier for you? There’s nothing wrong with grabbing a pie for desert from the local bakery, if that means you’ll have the time to prepare your home for the guests.

The better you are able to stay on top of a clean home, the more likely you’ll be able to keep it clean over the holiday period.

Recruit Help

Last but not least, don’t be afraid to ask for help from others in your home. Perhaps you typically take on the lionshare of responsibility when it comes to keeping a clean home. However, this time of year represents a unique situation.

Instead of just asking for general help, be specific about your requests. Come up with tangible ways that each member of the family can help, such as emptying the dishwasher or sweeping the entry way.

Prepare your family in advance of your requests, so they aren’t caught off guard. Chances are they would be more than willing to help, especially if you take the time to share with them why you’re asking in the first place.

The better you can prepare yourself and those around you for the holiday crush, the better you’ll be able to keep your home clean. Be smart, think ahead, and you’ll be rewarded with a clean home throughout November and December.
