In my early 20's, some well-timed career advice from Sir Richard Branson took me away from the friendly skies and propelled me to to produce high profile vintage styled events around the world including The Burlesque Ball, The Ruby Revue, Dr Sketchy's Sydney and Bijou Cabaret.
During my 10 years as a theatre producer, I also acted as an agent for burlesque, circus and cabaret talent, placing them into as well as bespoke contracts for high-end clients such as the MoMA New York, Pacha Moscow.
In 2010 I formed The Bijou Group with a business partner, and went on to co-found the Miss Burlesque Australia pageant and judged the world-famous Miss Exotic World in Las Vegas.
Aside from my own work with The Bijou Group, I worked in my own time with iconic organisations such as Cirque Du Soleil, Spiegelworld, Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras and bought exhibitions "to life" for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, and was Tour Manager for the controversial Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort.
At the height of the business's success, my business partner walked out, and I juggled some of the biggest shows of my career including bringing out The Hurly Burly Show from London's West End.
I was in talks to join forces with Michael Gudinski (Frontier Touring) but I was exhausted. The risk and stress had been huge for years, and the joy of the event success was all of a sudden not worth it.
So I walked away.
For a few months I tried to think of what to do next, so I attended business events, networking events and was bitterly disappointed.
The speaker was boring, the membership too expensive, and I always had to bring a friend, instead of going by myself.
I had an obvious idea.
Attract the right women, put them in the right space, and allow them to connect socially. If they hit it off, they would find a way to work together. I called it Business In Heels and after three events I was approached to license the event to another producer in Melbourne.
I did all my own PR, produced, promoted and marketed over 600 events, sold out huge theatres and tours; so it would be easy to teach other women to do it too. I wrote the training manual for the first licensee on a flight to New York and within three weeks I had 15 branches.
18months later there were over 50 branches (now franchised) across Australia, New Zealand, Spain, United States, United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Nepal, Canada and Thailand.
After selling Business in Heels in 2014 to a Franchisee, I chased a silly childhood dream to work on the radio. I redeemed every stored up favour, went to numerous courses and within a year commenced my time with Grant Broadcasters as Drive Announcer with Mix 104.9 in Darwin.
During my time in this role, I was soon helping other announcers with blogging, podcasting, social media. so after 12 months with the network, I ended up moving down south to Geelong, to a management role and overseeing the digital side of the business across 15 radio stations and 22 websites in my role as Online Content Manager VIC/SA.
Which leads us to today.
In November 2017 I bought Soar Collective from the very lovely Jess Jones, and it's been such a perfect fit. I'm confident in my position to inspire-connect-support all members of the Soar community.
Together with my wedding planning business, (Darling Don't Panic) Soar Collective now proudly sits as a key business within Bowie Bernasochi Pty Ltd.
Living in Geelong, and marrying my farmer husband, I know only too well the joys and frustrations of working remotely from home and I'm passionate about making Soar the community of choice for regional women of calibre around Australia and beyond.
